Dating Violence Dating Violence is defined as, “violence committed by a person who is or has been in a social relationship of a romantic or intimate nature with the victim”.
Discrimination Discrimination against any member of the AUB community on the basis of any “Protected Characteristics” (listed below) or any other legally protected characteristic under applicable U.S. and Lebanese law, to the fullest extent permitted by Lebanese law.
Protected Characteristics include: race, color, religion, age, national or ethnic identity, sex, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital status, disability, genetic predisposition or carrier status, alienage or citizenship status, and political affiliation.
Discriminatory Harassment Discriminatory conduct that raises to the level of harassment and that shows hostility or aversion toward an individual or group on the basis of their “Protected Characteristics” or any other legally protected characteristic under applicable U.S. and Lebanese law, to the fullest extent permitted by Lebanese law.
“Harassment” refers to conduct that has the intent or effect of:
  • unreasonably interfering with an individual’s or group’s educational or work performance; or
  • creating a subjectively and objectively hostile, intimidating, or offensive educational, work, or living environment.
Protected Characteristics include: race, color, religion, age, national or ethnic identity, sex, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital status, disability, genetic predisposition or carrier status, alienage or citizenship status, and political affiliation.
Domestic Violence Domestic Violence is defined as, “felony or misdemeanor crimes of violence committed by a current or former spouse or intimate partner of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabitating with or has cohabitated with the victim as a spouse or intimate partner, by a person similarly situated to a spouse of the victim under the domestic or family violence laws of [New York, or other applicable jurisdiction], or by any other person against an adult or youth victim who is protected from that person’s acts under the domestic or family violence laws of [New York, or other applicable jurisdiction]”.
Retaliation Retaliation includes, but is not limited to, any action, statement or behavior that is designed to punish an individual for making a complaint of discrimination, discriminatory harassment or sexual harassment, or cooperating with an investigation, or to deter an individual from making or pursuing such a complaint or participating in an investigation or the resolution of such a complaint.
Sexual Assault Sexual assault is defined to include, “forcible sex offenses,” i.e., “any sexual act directed against another person, without the consent of the victim including instances where the victim is incapable of giving consent,” and “non-forcible sex offenses,” i.e., “unlawful, nonforcible sexual intercourse” such as statutory rape and incest, but excluding prostitution.
Sexual Exploitation and Abuse “Sexual exploitation” is any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power or trust for sexual purposes, including, but not limited to profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another. “Sexual abuse” is the actual or threatened physical intrusion of a sexual nature, whether by force or under unequal or coercive conditions. This includes non-contact and online sexual exploitation and abuse.
Sexual Harassment Sexual Harassment is defined as unwelcome conduct (verbal, physical, written, graphic, electronic, media or other) of a sexual nature, which is so severe or pervasive that it unreasonably interferes with a person’s university employment, academic performance or participation in university programs or activities, or creates a working, learning, program, activity or living environment that a reasonable person would find intimidating, hostile or offensive.
Stalking Stalking is defined as, “engaging in a course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to (A) fear for his or her safety or the safety of others or (B) suffer substantial emotional distress.
